The Kano state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) have called the executive governor of Kano state Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf to as a matter of urgency set-up committee to investigate people responsible for the Funding of Kano contingent at the just concluded National Para Games in Abuja.
SWAN Chairman in Kano Zaharadeen Saleh disclosed this in a statement sent to GLOBAL TRACKER in Kano on Friday.
According to the statement the attitude at which Kano contingent received Zero Funding at the just concluded national Para games undermine the image of the state government particularly regarding to its commitment to sports development.

“Firstly it is crucial to thoroughly investigate the committee saddled with responsibility for funding the Kano State contingent in the Para Games 2023 in Abuja, on why of insufficient and delayed funding” it said.
“It is also important to appoint a technocrat as the Commissioner of Sports Development. This individual should possess expertise and experience in sports management, ensuring effective decision-making and implementation of policies” it also said.
“Additionally, the Acting Chairman has done well and positively impacted the Sports Commission despite the challenges, it would be beneficial to acknowledge his efforts and provide him with an opportunity to continue contributing in a permanent capacity, or the government should appoint a substantive Chairman for the Sports Commission. But this role should be assigned to a knowledgeable and dedicated professional who can provide strategic guidance and oversight to the sports development initiatives in Kano” said Saleh.
The association also called for the appointment of special adviser to the gover on Sports activities alone which will serve as link between the athletics and the state government.
“It is advised to appoint a Special Adviser on Sports. This position would serve as a link between the government and the sporting community, offering valuable insights, recommendations, and acting as a voice for the interests of the athletes and sporting associations.”
The Chairman also said “the poor sports structure in Kano is indeed a significant challenge for the development of sports in Kano State. This challenge not only affects the overall progress of sports but also leads to insufficient funding for the athletes, as seen in the recent PARA GAMES 2023 ABUJA. Such lack of financial support undermines the image of the government, particularly regarding its commitment to sports development.

“Kano State holds great importance as the face of Northern Nigeria in terms of sports. By addressing the challenges of poor sports structure and insufficient funding through the proposed appointments, the government can demonstrate its commitment to sports development in the region. This will not only enhance the image of the government but also pave the way for a more prosperous and successful sporting future in Kano” it said.
Providing sports infrastructure in Kano State will definitely have a positive impact on the development of sports. Proper sports facilities such as stadiums, arenas, training centers, and playing fields are essential for nurturing and promoting sports talent.
With the availability of such infrastructure, athletes and sports enthusiasts will have the opportunity to train and compete in a professional environment. This will not only motivate the existing athletes to perform better but also attract more individuals to take up sports.
