NLC Decries High Rate of Rape, Child Battering, Domestic Violence Others

The Women Committee of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, has lamented the increasing rate of rape, child Battering and domestic violence in the North WestWestern States.

The North-West Zonal Coordinator, Women Committee, Comrade Martha Haruna-Banki, stated this on the occasion of North-West Zonal Conference of Chairpersons and Secretaries of the seven states of North-West zone held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

He said NLC cannot rule out poverty also playing a vital role in the increasing social vices in the society as well poor enlightenment on the need to see the value of women in the society.

She emphasised on the need for continued support to women so that, it help towards proffering lasting solution to the issues of Gender-Based Violence of all kinds in the zone.

In a remark, wife of the Kebbi State Governor, Hajiya Zainab Idris, represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, HAJIYA Maryam Umar, said the State Government has attached great importance to girl child education, women empowerment and as well condemned gender based violence and rape in the society.

She said with the introduction of Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), the state has achieved increasing enrollment of adolescent girls in schools by 40 percent.

The Kebbi State Chairperson, Women Committee of the NLC, Comrade Hadizay Abubakar Riba, said the conference holding for the first time in Kebbi State with the effort of the wife of the State Governor, was aimed at promoting the campaign on women and girl child education, Gender Based Violence GBV, and women empowerment for improving the livelihood and income for women.

In a goodwill message, the State NLC Chairman, Comrade Murtala Usman, lauded the NLC women committee for organising the conference and called on the participants to make useful suggestions on issues pertaining development of women.
