The Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC) Kano state chapter has Condemned in totality, the disruption of the just suspended state assembly re-run election at Kunchi/Tsayawa constituency.

The legal adviser of IPAC in Kano Salisu Salisu Umar stated this at a press conference in Kano on Saturday.

According to him, any actions that compromise the peace of the electoral process must be thoroughly investigated and addressed to safeguard the democratic rights of the citizens.

The legal adviser called on security agencies to provide a clear explanation, investigate and arrest the perpetrators and further prosecute them accordingly. “Peaceful election and political sanity during election are essential to restoring public trust and confidence in our electoral process.”

“Furthermore, IPAC urges all stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, and the electorate, to remain calm and peaceful in the face of this development. It is imperative that all parties respect the rule of law and work together to ensure that the electoral process is conducted in a transparent, inclusive, and peaceful manner,” he said.

“IPAC remains vigilant in its commitment to promoting democratic values and protecting the rights of the electorate. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for the necessary measures to sanitise our electoral system and uphold the principles of democracy,” Salisu said.

“The abrupt cancellation was due the irreparable crisis and election chaos sponsored by some political thugs which not only undermines the confidence of voters but also casts a shadow of doubt on the safety and the exercise of the right to vote and be voted for. The council then expresses profound concern over the rerun elections in six local government areas by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held today, February 3rd, 2023. These elections were critical for ensuring democratic representation and upholding the will of the people in our electoral process. The decision by INEC to cancel the rerun elections in these 10 polling units particularly in Kunchi/Tsanyawa local government areas is commendable. The magnitude of electoral violences in those polling units raises serious questions about the safety of electorates in further elections to come.”
