There was a reported case of Avian Influenza (bird-flu) at a farm located at Amanawa village in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi state with many birds reportedly died.
GLOBAL TRACKER learned that the disease had killed many peacocks in the affected facility.
Confirming the outbreak, Director, Veterinary Services, Kebbi State Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Dr Alheri Ibrahim-Sanchi said some peacocks were reported to have been died, adding that the pattern of mortality became worrisome, which a team of veterinary doctors were sent for preliminary investigation.

According to him, the state government has stepped-up efforts to mitigate the spread of the diseased which reared its ugly head in the state, as some farms reportedly quarantine.
Dr. Ibrahim Sanchi, said fumigation was carried out by a team of professionals under “One Health”, comprising experts from ministries of Animal Husbandry, Health, Environment, Information, as well as Principal Partners to curtail the spread of the disease to other farms and humans.
The commissioner said samples were taken to Veterinary Diagnostic Reference Laboratory in Jos and confirmed positive with H5N1.

GLOBAL TRACKER interviewed some birds owners and they expressed concern over the outbreak of the Avian Influenza which if care is not properly taking will also affect humans.
They called on the government to as a matter of urgency tackle the menace not to spread to other farms and as well investigate other farms to ensure they are avian influenza free before consumption.
