Dabi Community in Jigawa Seeks FG’s Intervention Against Flooding

Dabi community in Ringim local government area of Jigawa state has called out to the federal government, to intervene and rescue the community against flooding.

Mr Naziru Muhammed, the community representative for the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) in the community, made the call on Wednesday in Dabi.

He said that the community has been suffering as every rainy season, flood wreaks havoc on the community by destroying settlements, farmlands, and other properties.

The representative appealed that the situation could be curtailed if the Federal government could dredge the river in the community and link it with the Hadejia River basin.

“On behalf of the community, I am also appealing for the completion of the bridge that connects Ringim with Ajingi and other areas. This also will control the heavy flood we witness.” He said.

Speaking at the launch of loan disbursement by the World Bank under the project in the area, the community representative urged beneficiaries to ensure the timely return of the funds they will receive.

The World Bank representative for the project, Ashutosh Raina in his remarks, appealed for proper utilization of the fund.

He explained that the World in collaboration with the Federal and Jigawa State governments, has committed a lot of resources to the success of the project.

Also speaking, Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa state, pledged to ensure placing a lot of measures to control floods in vulnerable communities in Jigawa state.

Namadi, represented by Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nura Ibrahim, expressed readiness to embark on environmental rehabilitation to fulfill its mandate.

He appealed to the community to utilize the funds they will receive, to benefit from more projects shortly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  reports that the Dabi community is one of the communities in Jigawa state, selected to benefit from the World Bank-assisted project.

The fund will be disbursed to assist farmers commit more to saving the environment from hazards.

The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, is a World Bank-sponsored project that aims at increasing the implementation of sustainable landscape management.

It aims to improve Nigeria’s landscape and strengthen the country’s long-term enabling environment for integrated climate-resilient landscape management.
