Women in the Kiyawa local government area of Jigawa state, have been rushing to access family planning services, amidst a shortage of commodities and contraceptives.

Mrs Hauwa Hamisu Kiyawa, a nurse and Family Planning service provider at Kiyawa Primary Health Facility,  stated in an interview with a team of newsmen at the facility on Tuesday.

She explained that women in the area have been enlightened about the use of contraceptives and the need to space their children for their well-being.

Mrs. Hamisu stressed that some of the women usually come with their husbands to access the services on health grounds and other reasons related to economic hardship and other family issues.

According to her, “It’s been over two months since we received consignment and it’s been exhausted due to the high number of users.” She revealed.

She, however, explained that when she was posted to the facility in 2022, there was a large volume of unutilized family planning commodities because the users weren’t fully enlightened.

“So we embarked on serious health talks during ante-natal clinics with the women and now they have fully accepted the realities of family planning.” She added.

Mrs Hamisu further appealed to the government and donor agencies that were supplying the commodities to the women free of charge, to continue helping out because the demand is extremely high.

Some of the women at the facility who came for the services confirmed that they have been following up on the supply of the commodities at the facility for a while now.

The Officer in charge of the facility, Mr Sadiq Garba, confirmed that the women of the area have been trooping with their husbands to access the services.

He said that since people have been enlightened, there is a need to provide the commodities as they were coming in bulk some years back.

It was gathered that families in Jigawa state have awakened to the realities of child spacing for health-related issues and economic planning, concerning their children.
