National Environmental Sanitation Day: Kano Purchase Chemicals to Disinfect Wells Over Cholera Outbreak

The Kano state government has purchased chemicals and equipments for the Chlorination and disinfection community wells and other sources of water as parts of its proactive measures in preventing the Cholera outbreak in the state.

The state commissioner for environment and climate change Alhaji Nasiru Sule Garo disclosed this while briefing journalist on the occasion to mark the National environmental sanitation day 2024 celebrated on every June, 28 each year.

According to Garo, the chemicals would be used for vector control by larvidiling drainages, water channels and ponds, intensifying house-to-house sanitary inspection and food sanitation as a preventive and control measures in preventing the outbreak in the state.

“Our journey is far from complete. There is much more to be done, and we must continue to innovate and adapt to emerging challenges. On this National Environmental Day. I call upon every citizen of Kano State and Nigeria at large to take concrete steps toward environmental sustainability. Whether it’s planting a tree, reducing waste, conserving water, or advocating for policy changes, every action counts. This requires us to work together, to share knowledge and resources, and to take meaningful steps towards sustainable development of this noble cause.”

Nasiru Garo said his ministry as parts of its mandate has focused on putting in place various programs, laws, and policies aimed at having harmonious, robust and safe sustainable environment.

The commissioner said some of them are establishment of Agencies like WECCMA and participating ACReSAL, KNAP, NEWMAP-EIB.

√ Gazetting of Environmental Health Laws: like Pollution Control Law, Solid and Liquid waste management Law, WECCMA Law, as SOme oT the regulatory arrangement.

√ Environmental Education and sensitization: to create awareness and checkmate indiscriminate waste disposal, open defecation, deforestation and flooding like the re-introduction of a Hausa Radio program KAI DA MUHALLINKA’. These are all geared towards inculcating the culture of Enviroamantal discipline.

√ Observance of monthly Environmental Sanitation in Government MDAS, Markets, Motor parks and Communities in order to encourage the general public to be more responsible for their environment. Climate Change adaptation and mitigation measures; like the annual tree planting, restoration of green areas, degraded land and forest reserves, drainage clearance exercise, climate change awareness and education campaign, Regional, National, Sub-National and Sectoral Collaboration to address the climate change issues with a view to poster cooperation in tackling the effect of climate change and to institute mitigation, adaptation measures and resilience at all levels.

The commissioner then urged residents to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of refuse as government is working towards strengthening and restructuring the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board REMASAB for better waste management.

He said people should Invive the culture of planting and nursing trees in their homes, working place, communities while the ministry is ensuring that all those planted are being taking care off.

“People are also enjoined to imbibe the habit of drainage clearance within their immediate environment especially now that we are in the period of raining season, I must at this point commend the effort of some people in this aspect and encourage them to do more as the ministry will also continue the de-silting of the drainages in collaboration with different stake holders like the community self-help groups across the state and we will continue to evacuate the waste for a safe and healthy environment,” he added.

Nasiru Garo then commended journalist for supporting the ministry by publicizing all its activities, adding that the ministry will continue to work with them to achieved its goals.
