IIIT, NUJ Trains Journalist on Profession’s Ethics, Journalism Islamic Best Practice

The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), have trained journalist on the profession’s ethical standard and guide to the best Islamic practices.

During the one-day training the Kano state coordinator of IIIT Dr. Saidu Ahmad Dukawa said the even was organized to equipped young journalist with is does and don’t and Islamic perspective on journalism plus who to contributes their quota in the promotion of best practice.

Dukawa represented by Dr. Mustapha Chinade reminded the practitioners that the society depends on them to know happenings which should be done factually and fairly.

“You need to do the work truthfully and remember that Allah is watching you and your affairs because you will be accountable for your actions.”

Remarking, the chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalist, Kano state chapter Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, emphasized on the need to adhere to journalism code of ethics, upholding the truth and avoiding discrimination.

He said people are confident that journalists have a good responsibilities in society on telling truth and happening globally.

In a paper presentation Dr. Ibrahim Siraja Adahama of the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University Kano, identified ethics as the foundation of every profession as it guides liable and authentic practice.

According to him, journalists need to be well guided as well as uphold truth, balance, fairness, objectivity, and good conduct in the practice.

Dr. Adahama said journalists should prioritize verifiable truth, especially as Muslims, where truth holds great significance.

“A commonly accepted definition of truth is that it represents objective reality.”

He urged media practitioners to avoid bribery and corruption and to uphold a high level of professionalism.

The training, themed ‘Ethics of Journalism: Guide to Best Islamic Practice,’ gathered stakeholders and media practitioners to discuss professionalism and ethical conduct.
