The most powerful leader in Vietnam history Nguyen Phu Trong has died aged 80 “after a period of illness.”
The state media reported that the leader of Vietnam’s communist Party died as a result of old age and serious illness.
He led the country for 13 consecutive years and succeeded by To Lam, with report saying his death may bring and end to Vietnam’s rare period of political instability.
Trong was seen as an ideologue who viewed corruption as the gravest threat facing the party.
He launched a China-style crackdown on corruption in 2017, which led to the investigation of hundreds of government officials.
