The recent comments made the chairman of Academic staff Union of Colleges of Agriculture (ASUCA), Kano state chapter Abubakar Mohd Bello on the alleged irregularities in staff promotion, nonpayment of arrears allowance and other untrue allegations has been described as sabotage against agricultural development in Northwestern Nigeria.
GLOBAL TRACKER recalled that Abubakar Mohd Bello had last week in an interview with some local radio stations in Kano alleged that the provost of the Federal College of Agricultural Produce Technology (FCAPT) Dr. Muhammad Yusha’u Gwaram failed to pay arrears of staff allowances, stagnation on staff promotion among others.
However, a senior staff who have been in the college since its establishment and don’t want his name on print told newsmen that the college has never had a provost as workaholic as Gwaram.

“We are eager to collaborate with Gwaram as he possesses a strong work ethic and takes inspiration from our Executive Secretary, Prof. Garba Hamidu Sharubutu.” Gwaram is constantly proactive when it comes to staff welfare packages, particularly when it comes to our advancement, the peculiar allowance that was just implemented to lessen the impact of inflation, and the arrears of the aforementioned six-year arrearage, among others.
A few months ago, our provost issued a letter to the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) informing them of the retirement of Malam Muhammad Sani Haruna, the college registrar. Haruna officially retired on September 12th, and the notification was forwarded to the Council on September 13th to take the appropriate action.
The union leader is unaware that the provost does not have the authority to choose someone to that critical post; only the Council does. Yet at all, the departing registrar identified Idris Usman as one of the key officers a principal assistant registrar to manage the college’s administrative activities until a new registrar is appointed by the ARCN.
On the issue of our arrears, Dr. Yusha’u Gwaram made some effort to write a letter to the Budget office of the federation Abuja to clear the six-year arrears to all of our members of staff which was sent officially on 24 September 2024 which the chairman of the said union lied on their interview with the press on 25th of the same month you see the kind of people we have as leaders of union.
Moreover, on the issue of Promotion, since the inception of Dr. Gwaram, staff are enjoying promotion, out of 100%, 98% are scaling through the exercise and promoted.
The issue of promoting academic staff from lecturer 1 to senior lecturer that’s 11 to 13 is a phenomenon all over the fourteen colleges of agric as promotion criteria not FCAPT alone.
However, the negative aspects of unionism are undermining the work of the helpful individual that many people depended upon. To the dismay of all faculty members and students at the institution, the union chairman is undermining the Management’s efforts for personal benefit, despite the fact that unionism is nothing more than the protection and advancement of workers’ rights.

The chairman, Abubakar Mohd Bello, and his allies made various accusations on some local radio stations in Kano with the goal of discrediting the decent people and stakeholders from the supervising agency.
The so-called union head, Abubakar Mohd Bello, claimed that the college was behind the union’s members underdevelopment despite not being a financial member of the academic staff union ASUCA. Although, to the best of our knowledge base on investigations and interview with the staff, efforts are being made to enable better things in the institution, the management is not hesitant and its pursue of the rights of the academic staff anywhere at any time. Many staff welfare programs have been established and prioritized under Gwaram’s direction in an effort to inspire the working staff to fulfill the college’s mission.
