Scheduled Kano LG Elections Continue Despite Court Judgment — KANSIEC Chair

The chairman of Kano state independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) says the scheduled local government election in the state will continue despite court judgment sacking me and other five executives members of the commission.

The chairman of the commission Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi disclosed this “At one public sensitization town hall meeting with citizens groups and other critical stakeholders on the conduct of the forthcoming local government election” organized by Citizen for Development and Education (CDE) in collaboration with KANSIEC held in Kano on Wednesday.

He said the election process will continue as scheduled, adding that they will challenge the judgment in another court of law.

Speaking to newsmen earlier, the executive director of CDE Ambassador Ibrahim Waiya said the program was organized to create awareness and sensitize the general public on the conduct and importance of local government elections in the state.

According to the executive director, it is the responsibility of Kano people to vote leaders of their choice, no body would take away that from them and should make sure that they come out to votes and participate fully for the success of the elections.

“It was part of the election conduct that citizens should be sensitize on the conduct of the elections, to tell them the importance of participating in the elections, does and don’t in the election, the rules of engagement, citizens and voters responsibilities and well as the time frame of the elections,” said Waiya.

“Weather the chairman is sacked or not, the election will continue because their is other KANSIEC staff and they have the responsibility of continuation the process to logical conclusion, and it is at the discretion of the Kano state government governor to appoint new chairman or not,” he said.

In a remarks, the former deputy governor of Kano state Professor Hafiz Abubakar who double as pro-chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano said democracy is nothing without elections and that the general public especially in Kano should come out to fully participate in the local elections and votes leader of their choice despite the apathy.

“People in Kano and Nigeria have no longer trust the system, they votes people of their choice, some courts changes them to others, some vote leaders but the state of the economy is always not supportive, people are suffering, some don’t even have food to put on the table,” said professor Hafiz.

“But despite all the challenges, people should come out and votes, local government election is important and that people shouldn’t do away with their right,” he added.
