“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process,” Trudeau said.

“Last night, I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process. This country deserves a real choice in the next election.”

Justin Trudeau took office in 2015 on a series of lofty promises, from tackling climate change to bolstering social programmes and helping the Canadian middle class and today’s announcement is a dramatic fall from those early days of his tenure.

The prime minister has faced months of pressure from within his own party, where a growing chorus of Liberal MPs had urged him to step down before the next election.
