The federal government of Nigeria through the Ecological Project Office (EPO), office of the secretary to government of the federation (SGF) with the support of senator Suleiman Abdurahaman Kawu Sumaila are set to revived the irrigation faming system, water channels and other washed-away small brigades in Kano south senatorial district in Kano state.
The permanent secretary of the EPO, office of SGF Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndapho disclosed this when she led team of experts, including from EPO’s office, Hadeja Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Consultants, community leaders and other stakeholders on assessment visit to Challawa-Goje dam in Karaye, Tiga dam and washed away bridge in Bebeji and Kafinchiri dam in Garko local government area.
According to the permanent secretary, the assessment visit followed senator Kawu Sumaila’s and other prominent Kano people lobby and call to president Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the need to revived Kano south irrigation system which was tabled before senate by Kawu Sumaila and was supported by all the politicians at both red and green chamber at the national assembly in Abuja.

“Ecological funds project office, we are working across 36 states and the FCT on any ecological issues just like when water washed away land, bridges, irrigation system, agricultural or environmental challenges, flooding and other issues,” said Gogo.
“We are here to revived the irrigation system of Kano south, to engage with community leaders and all critical stakeholders on how to boost the system so that this part of the state will feed the entire state, we know this region is the food basket of Kano state, so we are here on behalf of the federal government led by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support Kano and to make sure that what happen with the alou dam in Maiduguri of Borno state don’t repeat itself in Kano and these communities that we have visited,” she added.
She further said all stakeholders ranging from farmers, community leaders, politicians, associations would be fully engaged so as to achieved the set objectives.
In a remark, the Kano south senatorial district senator Suleiman Abdurahaman Kawu Sumaila represented by Aliyu Abubakar Bulet Tudun Wada said the project if concluded would boost farming system in the state adding people across Kano south will be self reliance.
“We would be mobilizing members of the public from all communities to support this work so that the region will maintained his status as the food basket of the state, saying since the coming back of democracy from 1999 to date, Kano south has never benefit from project of this kind.
According to Bulet, in months Ajingi local government farmers and other areas would be benefitting with 300 boreholes, 300 farming implements and other machines that would be given free to farmers by senator Sumaila.

In an interview with GLOBAL TRACKER correspondent, the village head of Turawa in Karaye local government area Alhaji Suleiman Ibrahim said when completed, the project will improve the livelihood of all the communities and the neighboring local governments.
“The channelling of these dams would go along way in supporting us because a lots of our people don’t have the funding capacity of channelling the water making our activities almost impossible but by this we are optimistic that our income would improve,” he said.
The village head then assured the federal government that the people in the area is ever ready to ensure that the project goal is hundreds percent achieved.
