Kano state has recorded a tremendous improvements in security of life and properties of residents in the past two and a half year’s of engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf-led administration.
The state which has the highest number of youth across the country recorded the achievements through its projects tagged “Safe Corridor Initiatives — The Kano Model” initiated and implemented by the state government through Kano state ministry of information and internal affairs.
Comrade ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the state commissioner for information and internal affairs disclosed this at the 65th Nigeria Independence Anniversary in Kano state Themed: Strengthening National Security Through Unity and Development held at Kano state government house on Monday.

According to the commissioner, Kano state command of the Nigeria Police Force and the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA remained key partners with the statistics showing that the police is arresting 50–70 youths weekly in connection with drug abuse and crime, adding that “The NDLEA Kano Command recorded 1,345 drug abuse suspects in 2024 (1,301 males and 44 females).”
“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, upon assuming office, recognized the urgent need to change this negative narrative. Guided by his commitment to restore peace and protect the future of young people, he approved a deliberate non-kinetic intervention: the Safe Corridor Initiative (The Kano Model). This multidimensional programme targets repentant political thugs and drug users, offering de-radicalization, counseling, psychosocial and psychiatric support, rehabilitation, empowerment and reintegration into society,” said Waiya.
“The Safe Corridor Initiative focuses on two categories of youth namely, the Voluntary Repentant Youth (Thugs/Political Militants): This aspect involves: Identifying ring leaders of violent groups, Creating a database for profiling and monitoring, Providing mindset reorientation, mentoring, rehabilitation and empowerment, Transforming them into peace advocates and responsible citizens. Drug Addicts/Users: The interventions under this category involves the Building a database of school dropouts and vulnerable youth, Providing mentorship, rehabilitation and skills acquisition, Encouraging them to return to school or pursue productive careers,” he added.
In a remark, the executive governor of Kano state Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf represented by the chief of staff to Kano state government house Dr. Suleiman Wali Sani expressed the commitments of the present administration in boosting educational sector in the state been a powerful tool in reintegrating the repented youth in to the society.
According to Wali, the corridor plays a critical roles in combating political thuggery, social vices as well as the taking good steps to tackles phone snatching in the state.
The governor also urged members of the public to go out and collect their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) as stated by the Kano state residence electoral commissioner in charged of Kano.
The occasions has in attendance, representatives of Kano state residents electoral commissioner, the representatives of emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, civil society organisations, students from governments schools, government officials, and the journalist.
