The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has selected former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election, describing the partnership as a “unity and rescue ticket” aimed at addressing Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges and restoring public confidence in governance.

The party said Amaechi’s emergence followed extensive consultations among party stakeholders and coalition partners, as well as a careful assessment of his political experience, leadership credentials and performance as runner-up in the ADC presidential primaries.

Announcing the decision in a statement issued on Monday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the Atiku-Amaechi ticket represented a strategic alliance of two experienced statesmen with the capacity to provide the leadership required to reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth and national development.

According to Abdullahi, the proposed partnership goes beyond a conventional political arrangement and reflects the party’s determination to offer Nigerians a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.

“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development,” he stated.

The ADC noted that Amaechi’s extensive experience in public service made him a suitable choice for the vice-presidential position, citing his decades-long involvement in governance at both the state and federal levels.

Amaechi has served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, two-term Governor of Rivers State and later Minister of Transportation, positions through which he played significant roles in legislative administration, public policy formulation and infrastructure development.

The party argued that such a blend of legislative and executive experience would be invaluable in supporting a future ADC administration and ensuring a seamless transition into government if elected.

“Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government. This depth of experience will be invaluable in supporting the next ADC administration from day one,” the statement added.

Beyond governance experience, the ADC said Amaechi’s political influence across the South-South geopolitical zone and the wider Southern region would strengthen the ticket’s national appeal and reinforce the party’s efforts to build a broad-based coalition capable of winning the presidency.

The party maintained that the Atiku-Amaechi alliance reflects a deliberate effort to forge national unity by bringing together leaders with diverse political backgrounds, regional influence and extensive experience in public administration.

“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions. Their combined experience in governance, economic management, public administration, party organization, and nation-building offers Nigerians a credible and compelling alternative capable of restoring confidence in government and accelerating national development,” Abdullahi said.

The announcement is expected to reshape political calculations ahead of the 2027 general election, with analysts already viewing the partnership as one of the most formidable opposition alignments against the ruling administration.

The ADC expressed confidence that the ticket would energise its growing coalition, attract wider public support and provide what it described as the leadership needed to address insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment and other pressing national concerns.

“The leadership of the ADC is confident that this partnership will energize our growing coalition, inspire hope among Nigerians, and provide the leadership necessary to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement noted.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, the party called on its members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, and Nigerians across the country to rally behind its campaign and support its vision for national renewal.

The emergence of the Atiku-Amaechi ticket marks a significant milestone in the ADC’s preparations for the next presidential contest and signals the party’s intention to mount a vigorous challenge for power in what is expected to be one of Nigeria’s most keenly contested elections.
