The Kano State Government has approved the distribution of 775 fire extinguishers to Science and Technical Schools across the state as part of measures to safeguard lives and property and provide a safe and conducive environment for teaching and learning.

The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Science and Technical Schools Board (STSB), Professor Dahiru Sale Muhammad, disclosed this during an enlightenment meeting involving the Board’s management, principals of Science and Technical Schools and representatives of the Kano State Fire Service at Government Technical College, Kano.

Aliyu Muhammad Zangina, the information officer of the science and technical schools board disclosed this in a statement sent to GLOBAL TRACKER in Kano at the Weekend.

According to the statement, Professor Dahiru said the meeting was organised to educate school principals on the proper and professional use of fire extinguishers and other safety equipment in the event of fire emergencies.

He explained that about 70 per cent of activities in Science and Technical Schools involve practical sessions conducted in workshops and laboratories, where electricity-powered equipment and generators are extensively used.

He therefore stressed the need for schools to adopt adequate fire prevention and safety measures to protect students, teachers, other staff and school property.

Speaking at the meeting, a facilitator from the Kano State Fire Service, Higher Fire Superintendent Ibrahim Umar Muhammad, said the programme was designed to complement the state government’s efforts to strengthen preventive measures for safeguarding lives and property at the grassroots.

Ibrahim Umar explained that the fire extinguishers would be strategically distributed to key areas within the schools, including administrative blocks, laboratories, workshops and hostels, to ensure adequate coverage and enable quick response during fire emergencies.

Meanwhile, the STSB has also distributed working materials and equipment to Science and Technical Schools across the state to enhance practical teaching and learning.

The materials include sewing machines, gas cookers and other essential tools and equipment required for laboratory and workshop practicals.

In a goodwill message, the Principal of Government Technical College, D/Tofa, and Zonal ANCOPPS Chairman, Alhaji Salisu Tijjani, who spoke on behalf of other principals, commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for what he described as his foresight and commitment to investing substantial resources in the education sector.

Salisu said the administration’s investment in education would contribute significantly to improving the quality of teaching and learning while equipping students with relevant technical and vocational skills.

He assured the state government of the principals’ continued support and cooperation towards ensuring that the equipment and safety facilities provided are properly utilised for the benefit of teachers and students.

The initiative, according to the STSB, is expected to strengthen fire safety preparedness in the state’s Science and Technical Schools while supporting effective practical education and skills development among students.
