The Anniswan Women Health Initiative (AWOHI) has launched a welfare and healthcare programme for elderly people in Kano State, beginning with a visit and donation of essential supplies to residents of the Old People’s Home in Shahuci.
The organisation’s Executive Director, Maryam Rabiu Muhammad, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the facility, where AWOHI donated food items, body cream, soap, ablution containers and other essential supplies to support the residents.
She said the visit was aimed at strengthening the relationship between the organisation and the home while identifying areas where AWOHI could intervene to improve the living conditions, health and well-being of elderly residents.

As part of the initiative, the organisation introduced a programme titled “Our Elders, Our Heritage,” designed to promote the dignity, welfare and healthcare of older people, particularly those living in care homes or lacking adequate family support.
According to AWOHI, the programme will address loneliness and social isolation among elderly people while providing essential household supplies, hygiene products, clothing and other necessities based on beneficiaries’ needs.
The initiative will also feature health awareness campaigns and medical check-ups in collaboration with qualified healthcare professionals. Elderly people requiring specialised medical attention will be referred to appropriate healthcare facilities.
Beyond healthcare and material support, the programme seeks to create opportunities for older people to share their life experiences, wisdom and cultural heritage with younger generations.
AWOHI said the approach would help strengthen intergenerational relationships, promote respect for elderly people and preserve valuable community traditions and history.
Speaking during the visit, Maryam Musa, an official of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), welcomed the organisation’s intervention and expressed support for efforts to improve the welfare of vulnerable members of society.
She noted that initiatives targeting elderly people could improve their well-being while strengthening collaboration between government agencies and non-governmental organisations.
A representative of the Kano State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction also attended the visit, underscoring the importance of cooperation among stakeholders in addressing the needs of vulnerable groups.
AWOHI said it hoped to establish partnerships with government agencies, healthcare institutions, private companies, philanthropists and other stakeholders to ensure the programme’s sustainability and wider impact.
The organisation added that it would monitor the initiative through records of visits and donations, feedback from beneficiaries and reports of activities undertaken.
AWOHI reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the welfare of elderly people, stressing that they deserved dignity, care, respect and love.
The organisation also called on government authorities, corporate bodies and members of the public to support initiatives aimed at improving the living conditions and healthcare of older people.
The programme represents a community-based effort to address the social, material and healthcare needs of elderly residents in Kano State.
