Army-Civilian Relations: Janguza Barracks Organises Unity Cup Competition in Kano

In its efforts to rebuild strong relationship between the Nigerian army and civilians in the country, the Nigerian Army, Janguza Barracks in Kano state has organized the 2025 unity cup football competition.

The thrilling and tight to end competition saw Turbo FC emerging victories over shining stars.

Major Haruna Idris, 73 battalion commander Janguza Barack Kano, said the tournament which was initiated to foster peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding between military personnel and the surrounding civilian community.

According to him, during the football matches, command’s personnel engaged civilian on security tips and how to share security information with security agencies so as to protect the lifes and properties of the general populace.

“If you see the tournout of this matches you will be convince that the organisers of this competition have done a very good job, and we hope that those who lost this time will try and work hard to win the tournament next time,” said Janguza commander.

Speaking during the event, the Commander of 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ahmad Muhammad Tukur emphasized the importance of community engagement, noting that the Unity Cup aims to bridge the gap between the army and civilians.

“This football competition is part of our ongoing efforts to promote unity and strengthen the cordial relationship between the Nigerian Army and residents within and around the barracks,” he said.

He added that such initiatives are crucial in changing the negative perception some members of the public may hold about the military, stressing that the army remains a friend and protector of the people.

The final match, played at the Janguza Barracks football field, saw Turbo FC take an early lead in the first half through a goal by Mustapha Abdullahi. The momentum continued into the second half, with Isa Idris of Turbo FC converting a penalty to double the advantage.

Despite a spirited fightback by Shining Stars, who managed to pull one goal back, the match ended 2–1 in favor of Turbo FC.

The Unity Cup 2025 was hosted courtesy of Major H. Idris, the Commanding Officer of Janguza Barracks, who also lauded the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by all participating teams throughout the tournament.

The event was attended by military personnel, community leaders, youth groups, and enthusiastic spectators, all united in the celebration of peace and camaraderie.
