Sustained and heavy gunfire broke out near the central prison in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, on Tuesday.
According to reports from AFP and Reuters news agency, the cause of the shooting and the identity of those involved were not immediately known.
The gunfire was heard close to the presidential palace, prompting heightened security in the area.

Witnesses said the shooting began shortly before 9:00 a.m. (09:00 GMT) and lasted for more than 30 minutes. “I heard vehicles speeding by and then automatic gunfire,” said Thierno Balde, an accountant who works in the neighbourhood.
An AFP journalist reported that police officers and special forces blocked access to the road leading to the prison, while an armoured vehicle belonging to the special forces was stationed outside the facility.
Authorities had not issued an official statement at the time of filing. More details are expected.
