Combating SGBV: LIWEED and ROLAC Sensitize Communities in Kano on Breaking the Silence

In their efforts to combat the spade and high rate of Sexual Gender Based Violence SGBV and other form of social vices in the metropolis, the Life Line Initiatives for Widows, Empowerment and Economic Development (LIWEED) in collaboration with Rule of Law and anti-corruption (ROLAC) has sensitized stakeholders in Tarauni local government area.

The sensitization was part of the community engagement with relevant stakeholders on the call to action so as to break the silence, and stop SGBV in were in Nigeria.

Saratu Maigida, the executive director of LIWEED in an exclusive interview with GLOBAL TRACKER correspondent in Kano, Tuesday said the program focused of taking strategies in ending SGBV from the community level especially in Tarauni.

Mai-gida represented by Hannatu Ibrahim said “We want create awareness and referral mechanism so that members of the community would be fully engaged in fighting the issue, based on record, Tarauni is one of the community with highest number of issues and we are working in Tarauni local government area and so, the sensitization is necessary so that people in the community would know how to report any SGBV issues to stakeholders for necessary actions.”

“SGBV is a serious issue and it takes many forms, it may come in sexual harassment or gender biased, physical abuse, emotional abuse, Psychological manipulation or harassment, so we should try an bring an end to this abuse, adding that everyone has the right to live free from sexual and gender-based violence, with safety and dignity,” she added.

She then urged health official, security agencies, judiciary and community leaders to support LIWEED and ROLAC’s efforts in fighting SGBV to as to have safe, better and lively society.

In a remark, the ward head of Unguwa Uku in Tarauni local government area Alhaji Mahe Muhammad commended the dua for engaging with all relevant stakeholders, adding that the district head of Tarauni is supporting any moved aimed at protection of life and properties of residence.

Muhammad then urged all stakeholder to work hand-in-hand traditional leaders in achieving the set objectives.

The meeting has in attendance, traditional leaders, security agencies, Hisbah, and the journalist.
