Kano Assembly Withdraws Impeachment Notice Against Former Deputy Governor

The Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) has officially withdrawn its impeachment notice against former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, following his voluntary resignation from office.

The decision was taken during a plenary session after a motion was moved by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, and presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Isma’il Falgore.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the sitting, Hussaini said the withdrawal was in line with Order 3, Rule 6A of the Assembly’s procedures, noting that the resignation of the former deputy governor had rendered further legislative action unnecessary.

“We have withdrawn all charges against him, and the matter has been laid to rest. We will no longer pursue these offences because our role is limited to removing an official if found guilty. Since he has voluntarily resigned, how can we continue? We are not the EFCC or ICPC; our mandate has been fulfilled,” he said.

The impeachment process was initially launched on March 5, 2026, when the Assembly began proceedings against Gwarzo over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

The move followed a petition submitted by the Executive, which accused the former deputy governor of alleged irregularities during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024.

While presenting the petition, the Majority Leader had stated that the impeachment notice was issued in accordance with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

With the withdrawal of the impeachment notice, the Assembly has now formally closed the matter, bringing an end to the proceedings.

Political observers say the development marks the conclusion of a significant episode in the governance of Kano State, as attention shifts to the evolving political landscape in the state.
