Kano State has been lauded as the leading state across the federation in budgetary allocation to the education sector for the 2026 fiscal year. This commitment was highlighted at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Education Summit, where the state’s appropriation of over N400 billion, amounting to 30% of its total budget, was recognized as a national benchmark.
The commendation came as State Governors and education stakeholders converged at the Ladi Kwali Hall Abuja, for this year’s NGF Education Summit, themed: “Pathways to Sustainable Education Financing, developing a Synergy between the Town and Gown in Nigeria.”
The Kano State delegation was led by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who also doubles as the Commissioner for Higher Education. The deputy governor was accompanied by Gwani Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, the Commissioner of Education, as well as heads of various education agencies and captains of the industry.

Musbahu Aminu Yakasai, the Director Public Enlightenment, Kano state Ministry of Education disclosed this in a statement sent to GLOBAL TRACKER in Kano on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Kano’s Golden Sponsorship and High-Powered Delegation to the summit, reveals commitment and the state quest for educational advancement as demonstrated through its participation as a Golden Sponsor for the high-profile summit.
Vice President Kashim Shettima was represented at the occasion by the former FCT Abuja Minister, Mallam Aliyu Modibo who described the summit as an important avenue to identify education gaps with a view to discussing ways and strategies to bridge them. This statement is in alignment with Kano State’s renewed focus on addressing systemic challenges and improving educational outcomes through absolute financing.
Setting a National Standard for Education Financing, the over N400 billion Kano State allocation to education for the 2026 fiscal year reinforces Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Government’s commitment to the declaration of a State of Emergency in the education sector, hence revamping the reform.
The kano state’s unprecedented financial dedication for the proposed 2026 budget to education, intends to look at massive infrastructure upgrades, enhanced teacher training and a comprehensive overhaul of the educational system to ensure quality, accessibility and inclusivity for all kano people.
During his presentation the honorable commissioner of education, Gwani Dr. Ali Abubakar Makoda, gave key highlights on the state of basic and secondary education in Kano state, with a view to attract funding and investment to the sector. Makoda revealed that Kano state has over 12000 public basic and secondary schools, with over 5.2 million students, numbers which are higher than that in several states combined. According to the honorable commissioner, this should be the reason for massive investment and funding by partners to the sector across board.
The two days summit was attended by all and sundry in the education sector, including partners within and outside the country. Kano state government however received an award of excellence at the end of the summit.
