Wike Confrontation with Military Officer: Northern Youth Assembly Condemns FCT Minister

The Northern Youth Assembly (NYA) has strongly condemned the Wike confrontation with military officer in Abuja. The group described the act as unethical, arrogant, and unbecoming of a public official.

NYA Expresses Deep Disappointment

The Northern Youth Assembly (Majalisar Matasan Arewa), a coalition of progressive young voices across the 19 Northern States, has expressed deep disappointment over the public misconduct of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In a statement signed by its president, Dr. Ali Mohammed, and secretary general, Dr. Abdulhafiz Garba, the Assembly said the incident—widely circulated on social media—reflects arrogance, abuse of power, and a lack of decorum. According to the group, a minister should embody leadership, humility, and service to humanity.

Disrespect to Public Institutions

The Assembly noted that Wike’s public humiliation of a young officer performing his lawful duty is unethical and shows total disregard for civility. It said the act was a direct affront on the Nigerian public service and a poor example for millions of young citizens who look up to public officials for inspiration.

Such behaviour, the group stated, is unbecoming of a serving minister under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration has promised renewed hope, professionalism, and inclusiveness in governance.

Pattern of Misconduct Alleged

The Assembly stressed that this is not the first time Wike has displayed conduct that undermines the dignity of public office.

It cited the following examples:

  1. Abuse of Power: Persistent verbal intimidation of subordinates, contractors, and elected officials since assuming office.

  2. Politicizing Administration: Using his position for political vendetta instead of service delivery, causing fear and uncertainty within the FCT.

  3. Public Outbursts: Repeated confrontations with political stakeholders, which have tarnished the image of the federal government.

  4. Lack of Transparency: Allegations of unethical demolitions and questionable property allocations that have eroded public trust.

Call for Accountability

According to the Northern Youth Assembly, true leadership in the 21st century requires maturity, restraint, and respect for due process—not arrogance and self-promotion.

The group warned that Wike’s conduct disrespects Nigeria’s uniformed institutions and undermines democratic accountability and civility.

Call on President Tinubu

The Assembly urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review Wike’s continued tenure as Minister of the FCT. It said removing him would send a strong message that impunity and abuse of public office will no longer be tolerated.

The statement concluded by stressing that Nigeria deserves leaders who uplift institutions—not those who embarrass them. Leaders, it said, should inspire the youth, not intimidate them.
