The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on a staff member of Albarka Radio by police officers during the Sallah celebration in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.

In a press release issued on Monday and signed by the Council Secretary, Isah Garba Gadau, on behalf of the council chairman Umar Sa’idu, the union described the incident as barbaric, unacceptable, and a direct attack on press freedom.

The NUJ stated that the act represents a gross violation of human rights and reflects a disturbing level of misconduct by officers entrusted with the responsibility of protecting citizens.

The union called on the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that all officers found culpable are appropriately sanctioned.

It further demanded that the Bauchi State Police Command assume full responsibility for the victim’s medical expenses.

The council warned that failure to take decisive action could force the union to convene an emergency congress to determine its next line of action.

The NUJ also urged media organisations across the state to remain vigilant, reiterating its firm stance against intimidation, harassment, and brutality targeting journalists.
