NUJ President, Waiya Commissions Kano Online Media Chapel

The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) comrade Alhassan Yahaya alongside the Kano state commissioner for information and internal affairs comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya has commissioned the Kano state Online Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists as part of the celebration of Kano press week.

Yahaya during a dinner and award night to mark the closing ceremony of the 2025 NUJ Press Week organised by the Kano State Council held in Kano said the union which first in its history elect woman to be the vice president respect Kano been a state with highest number of practising journalists across northern part of the country.

Comrade Yahaya revealed that the NUJ is pursuing new innovations, including improved remuneration for journalists working in federal media organisations.

According to him, discussions are ongoing with the Minister of Information, expressing optimism that once implemented at the federal level, the union would advocate for adoption across the 36 states.

Comrade Yahaya also announced plans by the union to introduce a health insurance scheme for journalists, aimed at reducing out-of-pocket expenses, lowering maternal mortality, and supporting the drive toward universal health coverage.

Also speaking, the Kano state commissioner for information Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya shared a strong relationship between the leadership of the chapel and his ministry affirming that the state government will continue to work with all journalists in the state for effective information dissemination.

Waiya said his ministry has introduced many reforms and policies including capacity-building programmes, a state media information policy, inclusion of online media practitioners, and the establishment of a veterans’ league to support retired journalists and mentor younger ones.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Online Media Chapel comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo commended the National President, Waiya and Kano state chairman of NUJ comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi for the support and commitment, assuring that all will work within the ethical standard of journalism.
