Polio Survivors Should Be Given Special Treatment at Schools, Hospitals, Other Facilities in Kano — SWOCHI

The Society for Women and Child Health Initiatives (SWOCHI) has urged for federal and Kano state government to deploy a mechanism so as to give a special treatment to Polio survivors and other person living with disabilities (PWD) in the state and the country by extension.

SWOCHI said PWDs found themselves in a difficult situations as a result of unfavorable structures constructed in schools, health facilities and other public places in the country.

Malam Sharif Abubakar, the executive director of SWOCHI disclosed this at a focus group discussion to mark the celebration of 2025 World Polio Day with the themed “End Polio: Every Child, Every Vaccine, Everywhere, is a call to ensure that no child, in any setting, is left unprotected.

The World Health Organization (WHO) set aside the day to stand together to celebrate Africa’s progress towards a continent free of polio, and renew our collective commitment to protecting every child from this preventable disease.

A survivor, Zainab Idris Adam, a master’s degree holder from Bayero university Kano affirmed the need for a special treatment to physically challenge people in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.

“Their was a time, we are having lectures and test in school, I was their first before the time but due to policy in place the venue will not be open until it is time, after it was open all the students have to rush to sit at the front, i have no any other options than to also push, after they push and i also push, from their i cannot remember anything… but to see my self at the bed of the school clinic,” said Zainab.

Sharif then urged Kano state, federal government of Nigeria, united Nations health related organizations and other philanthropist to increase funding on health related programs aimed at tackling challenges in the sector across the globe.
