The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has urged the Kano state government review the schools upkeep funds to ensure schools operate smoothly, bridge salary gap between primary and secondary school teachers and other demands for better teaching and learning in the state.
The NUT also urged for implementation of the 2025 promotion for both primary and post primary schools in Kano.
Comrade Baffa Ibrahim Garko, the chairman of NUT in Kano made the plea at the 2025 world teachers celebration day organized by the union with the theme; ‘Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession’ held in Kano on Sunday.

“Our prayer to his excellency the executive governor of Kano state is to; Implementation of the 2025 promotion for both primary and post primary school teachers, Revisiting school upkeep funds, to ensure schools operate smoothly and effectively, Bridging the salary gap between primary school teachers and their counterparts in secondary schools, Implementation of duty post allowances tor principals of post pomary schools and Inclusion of NUT representatives in the Pension Brand Committee, to safeguard the post service welfare of teachers,” said the chairman.
He commended the state government for timely payments of salary as at when due, implementation of promotion to teachers and payments of promotion benefits, massive recruitment of new teachers by the state government and construction as well as renovation of classrooms across 44 local government areas in the state.
“I am using this medium to thank the Kano state government for; construction and renovation of classrooms, creating a more conducive atmosphere for learning across kano state basic and secondary schools as well as the reopening of more boarding schools which were closed across the state, Training and retraining programmes for our basic and secondary school teachers, which continue to improve teaching performance and methodology in basic and secondary schools in the state as well as Declaration of a state of emergency on education, as well as the convenance of education recovery conference to a bold and visionary strategic steps towards reversing the declining quality and access, particularly in the lower and upper basic education sector by extension to secondary and tertiary levels,” said Baffa Garko.
In a remark, the executive governor of Kano state Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf represented by the secretary to the state government Alhaji Faruk Umar commended teachers in the state for their commitment to upholding teaching and learning were by improving educational standard and reducing the out of school children in the state.
“We have supply over three (3,000.00) thousand three-seater furniture and distributed to various primary and secondary schools in the state, Our goals is to bridge the gap in educational resources especially in rural areas to reduce out of school children and improve educational sector in the state,” said the SSG.
He assured to continue supporting strong relationship between teachers, parents and other wider community for effective service delivery and ensuring quality education in the state.
World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe.
During the day, a celebration is held globally in commemoration the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 United Nation Educational and Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and International Labour Organization (ILO) Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
