NGO Trains Community Members on Early Response to Electoral Violence

The OXFAM, an International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has emphasized the need to take cognizance of early signs as a mechanism for early response to electoral violence to sustain peaceful co-existence in society.

OXFAM country director in Nigeria Dr. Vincent Ahinso started this on Thursday in Kano at a 2-day training for community stakeholders.

The training tagged “EARLY WARNING, EARLY RESPONSE (EWER) System for Community Stakeholders” was aimed at strengthening community capacity to adopt mechanisms that promote peaceful co-existence, understanding the triggers of violence, mitigation measures, and build trust among various stakeholders within communities in Kano and Plateau states.

Also speaking at the event OXFAM Kano State focal person Isah Garba Muhammad said “the essence of the training was to ensure that community stakeholders are inundated on signs to look for and how to address issues before it turns into violence.

He noted that “no society can develop in a chaotic environment.”

Garba added that “understanding of the early warning signs prevented violence before, during and after the General Elections.”

Some of the participants who spoke at the training supported by START FUND applauded the initiative of the organizers noting that the training was timely.
