NGO Organises Dialogue on Conflict, Poverty in Context of Gender in Borno

Participants at a one-day stakeholders dialogue on gendered-context analysis on conflict and bad governance have identified inequality, lack of economic empowerment and nepotism as factors exacerbating violence and instability in the country. 

The meeting also stressed the need to give constitutional role to the traditional institution to improve governance and development at the grassroot.

Convener of the dialogue session and Executive Director Unified Members for Women Advancement UMWA Dr Hassana Ibrahim said the platform afforded participants the opportunity to discuss the issue of gender in the context of conflict, weak governance and poverty in the society.

According to her, the meeting also identified mitigation strategies, personalities and agencies saddled with the responsibility of addressing the concerns.

“the lack of autonomous power to traditional rulers have hindered them to take decisive action on some of the challenges society is experiencing” Dr Ibrahim lamented.

Dr Hassana Ibrahim remarked that the organisation will also convene a women-led policy engagement with the aim of strengthening partnership with all the stakeholders to find a sustainable solution to the problems.

Some of the participants at the dialogue Assistant Commander National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA Borno state command Abdullahi Sardauna and a lecturer Department of Mass Communication University of Maiduguri Dr Rahila Jibrin decried the rising number of women engaged in substance abuse.

They also advocated for a holistic approach on the prevention of substance abuse.

The meeting was attended by security agents, traditional rulers and members civil society organisations.
