We’ll Soon Plants 20,000 Seedlings, Desilts All Major Drainage in Kano — Nasiru Garo

The Kano state ministry of environment has said that it would soon commence planting twenty thousand (20,000) seedlings on different major roads across the state to mitigate the effects of deforestation and maintain standard air quality in Kano metropolis.

The state commissioner for environment Alhaji Nasiru Sule Garo stated this in commemoration of the 2023 National environmental sanitation day held in Kano.

According to him, since assuming office, the present administration has achieved a losts ranging from Constitution of a strong task force committee on solid waste management, the restoration of defunct Refuse management and sanitation board (REMASAB) an agency saddled with the responsibility of solid waste collection and management among others.

He said the ministry has started consultation with the office of the permanent Secretary in charge of ecological activities of the federal government in an effort to fights Erosion, desertification and other environmental challenges facing the country, adding that soon the state government, will embark of drainage clearance exercise with a view to tackle predicted flooding in some parts of Kano state.

“Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen of the media, the planet we was beautifully created and was made conductive for human ecosystem and biodiversity existence, but the result of our action today is slowly making our
environment unfavorable for our survival. This human activities include among others open burning of plastic and other waste, deforestation, green house gases emission, indiscriminate waste disposal and open defecation,” said the commissioner.

He said “I wish to call on the general public to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal especially on our streets and drainages which poses serious threats of flooding and outbreak of diseases, people should also desist from illegal felling trees which not only provide conducive environment but also mitigate desertification challenges and balancing of ecosystemm, equally, open defecation and open burning of substances and illegal mining should be avoided.”

The commissioner called on the general public to complement government effort in addressing threat of flooding by engaging into regular drainage clearance especially during raining session.

Nasiru Garo explained that “It may be interest you to note that government has articulated an action plan through engaging with relevant stakeholders drawn from Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ministry of Commerce and Industries and Office of the Secretary to the State Government to provide measures on NIMET prediction on perceived flood at Sumaila and Tudun wada Local Governments respectively.”

He prayed for successful farming session and bumper harvests.
