Niger in Tears: The Pain of a Nation Crushed by the Crisis

Oct 3, 2023

For the past two months, Niger has been the theater of unprecedented turmoil, combining a growing deterioration of security with a devastating economic crisis.

The last five days have been particularly dark, marked by a series of tragic events that have shaken the country and the people.

THE FLARE OF VIOLENCE OF THEEIGS

At the heart of this security crisis is the Islamic State in Greater Sahara (EIGS), which orchestrated a series of complex attacks that took the lives of 84 soldiers in just five days.

These murderous attacks have highlighted the vulnerability of the new strategy (if any) of the Nigeriene Defence and Security Forces to this ongoing threat.

A HEAVY TRIBUTE TO THE MILITARY AND TEACHERS

While the country mourns its fallen soldiers, another tragedy unfolds behind the scenes. Many civil servants, including teachers and some of the military, did not receive their monthly salaries. This precarious situation threatens education and social stability.

THE ECONOMY IS IN DISREPAIR

Economic crisis hits Niger with full speed. The total shortage of rice, dairy products and other essential products, largely due to the sanctions imposed by the CEDEAO in response to the attempted putsch on July 26 by Generals Tiani and Mody, aggravates the misery of the population. Food prices are reaching unimaginable highs, putting food out of reach for many families.
