Fire Renders 120 Homeless, Burns Houses, Mosque in Kwara

Over forty (40) buildings at Ile Megida Onikanhun compound, Isale Edun area of Ilorin, Ilorin South local government area of Kwara state were on Monday morning gutted by fire.

The fire incident, which reportedly affected a mosque, left over 120 occupants homeless, affecting 44 rooms in the 75-room Magaji Onikanhun Compound.

No death was recorded.

Investigation revealed that an unknown person had ignited refuse at about 11:00 am, while smoke that ensued caused and spread fire to nearby compound and shops.

It was gathered that the buildings served as both residential and commercial purposes where items such as fairly used doors, furniture, beddings, among others were sold.

It was also learnt that the harmattan season aggravated the fire as the inferno continued to spread as fire men put frantic effort to put out the fire.

Youths of the neighborhood also helped to evacuate old men and women in the burning houses to prevent them from being killed in the fire.

Confirming the incident the Director Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa urged the general public to always play safe especially during this period.
