A coalition of youth groups in northern Nigeria, under the auspices of the movement for the Arewa Development Agenda, has condemned the action of renowned activist Mahdi Shehu against the former minister of justice, Abubakar Malami.

The group, during an emergency meeting held in Kano, expressed concern over Mr. Mahdi’s action.

The convener, Abubakar Muhammad, noted that “it will not mean well for the region.”

He said, “At the current situation in the country, Northerners need unity more than ever, which means hunting and blackmailing one another, especially among leaders and elders of the region.”

The meeting was held upon hearing an alleged report of the arrest of the activist by security operatives in Abuja.

The group then called on Northern leaders and elders to unite and confront the challenges facing the region, and that era of blackmailing and hunting one another is over.

Mahdi Shehu’s lawyer speaks on arrest.

M. I. Abubakar, the lawyer representing Mahdi Shehu, a Katsina State-born businessman and social critic, has stated that his client’s arrest and detention by police may be related to efforts by a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and some members of Muhammadu Buhari’s immediate past government to silence him for demanding accountability from them.

Shehu was arrested on Tuesday after Malami’s law office filed a petition on behalf of the former minister and his family, according to SahareReporters.

In a press statement released on Wednesday, the lawyer stated that his client was accused of attempting to extort N500 million from Mr Malami, which led to Shehu’s arrest on Tuesday.

However, the lawyer stated that the main reason Malami and others in Buhari’s administration wanted Shehu detained was to stop his persistent social media posts.
