Seven Qur’anic School pupils popularly called Almajiris of Malam Dan-umma Quranic School at Bayan Science, Badariya area, in Birnin Kebbi local government area of Kebbi State were confirmed dead Saturday morning.
Confirming the incident to newsmen at his residence inside the School premises at Badariya Bayan Science, the proprietor of the School, Malam Dan-umma said seven pupils died on the spot while the other one was hospitalized as a result of the collapse of the borrow pit that collapsed and buried them while collecting laterite sands.
“What happened, when I assigned them to go to the top of the hill near the School to excavate clay and gravel to mend holes inside their rooms against upcoming flooding before they came back, I was told a heavy chunk of the laterite had fallen over them”.

Adding that, on the heard of the news, he immediately rushed to the scene of the incident where he confirmed seven of them were dead and one other who survived was rushed to the hospital in Birnin Kebbi.
Malam Dan-umma further said the corpses of the seven deceased pupils were taken to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital Birnin Kebbi before being them to their parents for the funeral.
While lamenting over the unfortunate incident, Malam Dan-umma prayed to Allah SWA to grant the deceased Aljannar Firdausi.
An indigene of the area who is also a Special Adviser to Governor Nasir Idris on Pilgrims Agency, Alhaji Zayyanu Sanka, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and prayed to Allah to forgive the sins of the deceased.
He said the government will look into the possibility of banning the excavation of clay, soil, or gravel on top of such hills as a deliberate measure to tackle the future reoccurrence of such incidents.
