We’ll Plant Over Ten Million Tree in My First Tenure — Kano Governor

The executive governor of Kano state Alhaji Abba Kabiru Yusuf says his administration is committed to plant more than ten million (10,000,000) trees in his first term in office.

Governor Yusuf disclosed this while lunching 2024 tree planting campaign exercise in Kano metropolis on Wednesday.

According to the governor, “let me say this, planting trees in our environment is necessary now more than ever before, particularly with growing dangers of global worming arising from climate change, in this regards let me say my administration is committed towards planting over ten (10,000,000) million trees by the grace of Allah within our first term in office,” said Yusuf.

“We intends to achieved this through, local government mobilization which was lunched on Saturday by my deputy comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who double as commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs in Tsanyawa local government area, during our lunching, we use local government officials and in-house structures to Mobilized for planting trees and nursing them up to maturity, we have also reintroduced a program call ‘catching them young initiatives’ were we inspired and educate our younger generation on the importance of planting trees in the state,” said Abba.

He urged hospitals, business premises, government establishment, schools, traders, civil servants, Ulamas, political office holders and traditional institutions to continue to plant trees and nurse them to maturity to advert global worming.

He expressed the state government commitment in coming – off with policies and programme that will tackles the effects of climate change, erosion, land degradations and indiscriminate dumping of refuse on waterways in the state.

In a remark, the Kano state commissioner for environment and climate change Alhaji Nasiru Sule Garo said the inadequacy of trees in the environment is as a result of human activities ranging from bush burning, illegal failing of trees which is continuously putting pressure on the already fragile ecosystem were by causing rapid climatic disruption and threatening human life.

“Trees is very essential in the environment, human health and overall ecosystem stability as they absorbed carbon-dioxized from the atmosphere and store it as biomass through photosynthesis which reduces the concentration of green house gasses in the atmosphere,” said Nasiru Garo.

“When weather is chilly and Windy, the trees operates as wind breakers, the roots of the tree protect the soil while their leaves breaks the pull of the wind and reduce the effects of rain on the ground,” added Garo.

The commissioner urged the general public to cultivate the habit of planting trees and nursing them to full maturity as well as refrain from indiscriminate failing of trees so as to protect the environment and by extension Kano state.

Also speaking during an event, the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, has directed district, village, and ward heads to actively support and promote the initiative in their localities.

Sanusi who highlighted the religious and environmental significance of tree planting, noting its crucial role in tackling the global challenge of climate change through tree planting.
