Democratic party candidate Kamala Harris has picked current serving Minnesota governor Tim Wazl as her running mate in the November United States presidential election.

The 60-year-old is the governor of Minnesota, meaning he represents a the midwestern region that the Harris ticket will need to win big to defeat Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump.

Walz is a military veteran, a former teacher, and a high school American football coach who has been credited with pushing Minnesota to the left with his support of unions, abortion access and LGBTQ rights.

While nearly the same age as Harris, Walz has been described as bringing a folky, uncle-like flair to the race.

Harris is set to officially unveil Waltz as her running mate at a rally in Philadelphia tonight.

They will then embark on a tour of battleground states, campaigning in Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Nevada and Arizona.

Those states are considered the most likely to see races that could be won by either candidate – Harris or her Republican opponent Trump – and will be key to securing the White House.

Republican Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance will also be in Philadelphia today, holding a rally at 12pm local time (16:00 GMT).
