FG, ASUU Begins Crucial Meeting Over Planned Strike

The Minister of Education and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU are currently in a closed door meeting to avert the planned strike by the Union.

ASUU had at its National Executive Council NEC meeting held at the University of Ibadan, issued a 21-day notice for strike to the Federal Government, if their demands were not met.

Addressing journalists before the commencement of the meeting, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, said the meeting would shed light on efforts so far by the federal government to resolve the lingeeing issues since its last meeting with the Union.

“For us in the ministry, we will continue from where we stopped from our earlier meeting and find ways to progress.

“We share with you the desire to have stability in the education system, the federal government will continue to do what is right to have a good education.

“We want to ensure that our students remain on campus and the government is committed to give the university system the best it deserves,” he said.

The National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke expressed worry over the failure of the government to find a solution to the issues raised.

“We shelve the last strike because we were promised on resolution of our demands.

“Our members have waited for 15 months because they were involved in the suspension of the last strike.

“For 15 months, all issues raised have not been resolved. We hope that after this meeting we have a landmark of achievements to resolve our issues,” he said.

The meeting began at 2:17pm.
