Iran’s defence ministry has condemned what it called an “illegal and unjustified” expansion of the United States (US) sanctions targeting its oil industry following Tehran’s missile attack on Israel earlier this month.
Iran has been facing international sanctions on its oil industry for years, particularly from the United States, due to concerns over its nuclear program and alleged support for terrorism.
The sanctions were first imposed in 1979 after radical students seized the American Embassy in Tehran and took hostages.
In 2012, the European Union imposed an oil embargo on Iran, which was followed by other countries.
However, in 2015, Iran reached a nuclear deal with world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which lifted some sanctions in exchange for limits on Iran’s nuclear program.
Unfortunately, in 2018, the United States withdrew from the JCPOA and reimposed sanctions on Iran’s oil industry.
