The Kebbi state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) has refuted an alleged assassination attempt against its member saying ‘Mai-Akwai Abubakar Shatima’ is now an active politician not journalist.
The Union said the captioned by one newspaper that a journalist from Kebbi state escaped an assassination attempt is incorrect.
NUJ in a statement by the Union’s Secretary, Comrade Ismail Adebayo and made available to newsmen in Birnin kebbi said, from the available records, we want to say categorically that Mai-Akwai Abubakar Shatima is not a member of the state correspondents chapel nor was he a registered member of the NUJ in Kebbi State.

The statement stated that, on set record, he wes a former correspondent of the Sokoto state owned Newspaper, ‘The Path’.
It said, Mai-Akwai stopped practicing journalism many years ago and went into active politics and now an active member of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Kebbi and Sokoto state.
The Council wishes to enjoined the concerned newspapers claiming he is a practicing journalist in Kebbi state to ensure they get their facts right before publishing as the NUJ has records of all practicing journalists in the state but Mai-Akwai Abubakar does not have a record with the union.
