The International Committee of the Rad Cross (ICRC) has visited Radio Nigeria Pyramid FM Kano and Freedom Radio Kano as part of their stakeholders engagement including the media to promote understanding and respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
Aliyu Dawobe, the public relations officer Abuja Delegation of the ICRC said the IHL serves as a crucial framework for protecting civilians or those affected by armed conflicts.
According to him, the ICRC frequently collaborates with various stakeholders, including media, to ensure the protection of civilians by ensuring they are shielded from the effects of armed conflicts and are treated humanely, adding that the rules of Warfare must also be respected by regulating the means and methods of warfare to prevent unnecessary suffering and harm.
Dawobe said the group is also providing aid and support to those affected by conflicts, including prisoners of war, those arrested during conflicts and displaced persons.
In a remark, the general manager of Radio Nigeria, Pyramid FM Kano Garba Ubale Dambatta describe the visit as timely considering his efforts in reviving the lost glory of the station.
According to him, the station would work with ICRC especially in the areas of staff training and infrastructure.
He promise to be airing programs and jingles produced by ICRC on missing people, promotion of IHL, people arrested during armed conflicts, sensitization on the prevention of using chemical weapons during armed conflicts among others.
“When i re-took over the leadership of the station, its operation covered very limited area, now reached distance or i can say even hard to reached areas in Kano state, i installed new studios, upgrade some of the facilities among many other things,” said Dambatta.
