2025 World Polio Day: Mari-care Foundation and Survivors Urge Subsidy, Friendly Transportation System in Kano

The Mari-care foundation for widows, single parents, orphans and vulnerable children in Nigeria in collaboration with Polio survivors has urged policy makers to Kano and Nigeria to as a matter of urgency, to subsidized ot create a transportation system that would be favourable to polio survivors and other physically challenged people in the country.

A polio survivor who double as journalist working with Kano state Radio corporation in northwestern Nigeria Hajiya Bilkisu Ado Zango made the plea at a focus group discussion organized by Mari-care foundation held in Tarauni local government area of Kano metropolis on Friday.

According to her, physically challenged people in Kano state and the country were suffering on daily basis as a results of unfavorable building and structures raised in markets, government and private sectors, the development which need urgent attention in tackling those issues.

“A lots of structures like hospitals, supermarkets, government offices, airport, houses are not accessible for us, we need to have ramps, also children with physical disability faces more challenge then us, stakeholders and policy makers needs to be up and doing in ensuring adequate arrangement have been put in place to address the problems,” said Bilkisu.

Earlier, the executive director of Mari-care foundation Mrs Ola Taiwo said the 2025, 33 Days to Power Up Health and Immunization Campaign is an annual event initiated by NIYEL designed to engage civil society organizations (CSOs), celebrities, care givers, media workers and communities across Africa in raising awareness, strengthening trust, and promoting positive narratives around health and immunization.

This year’s theme, “33 Days to Tell Your Story,” invites everyone from citizens, to community leaders, to share real stories or testimonials of trust, protection, and resilience. Through storytelling, we aim to highlight community voices, fight misinformation, and inspire collective action to sustain immunization gains.”

According to Mrs Taiwo, each phase of the campaign will spotlight a key health milestone, beginning with World Polio Day (October 24), followed by World Pneumonia Day (November 12), the Day of Action for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer (November 17), and concluding with Universal Children’s Day (November 20, 2025).

She then urged stakeholders to take proactive measures in tackling challenges faced by polio survivors across the world.
