The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to boost civic participation as it targets no fewer than four million new eligible voters across 44 local government areas ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Briefing journalists in Kano, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, emphasized the importance of continuous voter registration and the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing them as critical pillars for strengthening democracy and inclusive governance.

The Commissioner disclosed that from August 2025 to date, a total of 267,790 eligible residents have successfully completed their voter registration and are currently awaiting the collection of their PVCs. While describing the figure as encouraging, he noted that much work still lies ahead to achieve the state’s ambitious voter registration target.

To drive the process, Comrade Waiya revealed that the Kano State Government, in August 2025, set up a high-powered sensitization committee to mobilize residents on the importance of continuous voter registration and PVC collection. According to him, the committee is designed to ensure grassroots engagement and statewide coverage.

He explained that the committee is composed of four commissioners namely the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Commissioner for Livestock Development. The committee also includes special advisers, officials of the Hisbah Board, representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and other key stakeholders.

According to the Commissioner, the committee’s mandate is to reach communities across all 44 local government areas with the goal of ensuring that at least four million Kano residents are registered and adequately prepared to participate in the 2027 elections.

Beyond voter registration, Comrade Waiya highlighted ongoing government efforts in development, revealing that the Kano State Government is currently executing over 900 projects across the state.

He said the projects cut across key sectors and are deliberately spread across all local government areas to promote inclusive growth and improve the quality of life of residents.

The Commissioner urged Kano residents to continue supporting the present administration in the discharge of its constitutional mandate, stressing that sustained public support is vital to the successful implementation of government programmes and the upliftment of living standards across the state.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, citizen engagement, and democratic participation, calling on eligible voters to take full advantage of the continuous voter registration exercise.
