The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has resigned from his position with immediate effect.
Reports indicate that Gawuna has concluded plans to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in what is seen as a significant political shift in Kano State.
He is expected to formally announce his defection on Tuesday.
In a resignation letter dated March 27, 2026, Gawuna stated that his decision was in compliance with directives issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, requiring political appointees to step down in line with provisions of the Electoral Act ahead of political activities.
“My resignation is in strict compliance with the President’s directive requiring all political appointees to step down in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act,” the letter read.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as a privilege and an avenue to contribute to national development, particularly in advancing housing finance through the FMBN.
Gawuna also stated that he is placing his future “in the hands of Allah (SWT),” while seeking divine guidance on his next political steps.
The former APC governorship candidate in Kano further assured of a smooth transition, pledging to hand over responsibilities in accordance with established procedures.
Political observers say the move may signal a broader realignment in Kano politics, especially given reports linking his defection to the political influence of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a key figure in opposition coalition efforts.
Gawuna’s resignation adds to a growing list of political appointees stepping down ahead of anticipated political contests, as parties begin strategising for future elections.
