A wave of grief and outrage has swept across Kano State following the death of 14-year-old Maimuna Sani Yaro, popularly known as Nihal, whose tragic passing after an alleged school punishment has sparked widespread calls for justice and accountability.
Nihal, a Junior Secondary School Two (JSS2) student of St. Louis Secondary School, Kano, reportedly died after being subjected to disciplinary measures at the school, a development that has generated intense public concern among parents, education stakeholders and child rights advocates.
The tragic incident has also ignited heated debate on school disciplinary practices, students’ welfare and the need for safer and more humane approaches to discipline within educational institutions.
At the center of the controversy is Nihal’s grieving mother, Nusaiba Danshareef, who says the family remains devastated and deeply troubled by the circumstances surrounding the death of their only daughter.
Speaking in an emotional interview with Arewa Radio, Monitored by Solacebase and rely by GLOBAL TRACKER, Danshareef alleged that officials of the school attempted to suppress details relating to the actual cause of her daughter’s death.
According to her, suspicion began to grow shortly after the family was informed that Nihal had suddenly slumped and died.
Her concerns, she said, intensified when the school’s Vice Principal, Halima Babayaro, visited the family residence to condole with them.
“She pleaded with me to ignore any future comments about my daughter’s cause of death,” Danshareef recalled emotionally. “That statement alone made me begin to wonder if there was more to the story than what we had been told.”
The grieving mother explained that the following morning, her mobile phone became flooded with screenshots, messages and social media posts carrying the hashtag #JusticeForNihal.
According to her, the online campaign by students and sympathizers reinforced suspicions that important details surrounding the teenager’s death may not have been fully disclosed.
“This further gave credence to my suspicion that there was foul play and an attempt to cover up what really happened,” she alleged.
As public attention intensified, additional accounts reportedly emerged from students familiar with the incident.
According to information relayed to the family, Nihal was allegedly subjected to punishment that required her to remain standing under the scorching sun for several hours.
Sources claimed that the teenager eventually collapsed and was rushed to a hospital in Kano, where medical personnel later confirmed her death.
The allegations have triggered serious concerns regarding the safety and appropriateness of disciplinary methods used in schools, especially involving young students.
Many residents and education observers have questioned whether the alleged punishment, if confirmed, complied with acceptable standards of child protection and student welfare.
The incident has also reignited discussions surrounding corporal punishment and other harsh disciplinary practices in schools across the country.
Child rights advocates have repeatedly called for reforms that prioritize counseling, guidance and non-violent corrective measures rather than punishments capable of endangering the physical or emotional wellbeing of students.
As public anger continued to mount, the management of St. Louis Secondary School had yet to issue an official statement addressing the allegations or providing a detailed explanation of the circumstances leading to Nihal’s death as of the time of filing this report.
However, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board, Baba Umar, confirmed that a government fact-finding delegation visited the school following the incident.
According to him, the delegation was informed that Nihal had allegedly been punished by the school’s Imam over claims that she failed to report to the mosque on time.
The revelation has added another layer to the controversy and intensified calls for an independent and transparent investigation into the matter.
Residents, parents and civil society organizations have continued demanding accountability, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the student’s death must be thoroughly investigated to establish the truth.
Across social media platforms, the hashtag #JusticeForNihal has continued to gain momentum, with many Nigerians calling for justice for the deceased student and reforms in school disciplinary systems.
For Nihal’s family, however, the tragedy remains deeply personal.
Beyond the growing public campaign and calls for accountability lies the pain of parents mourning the sudden loss of a promising young girl whose life was cut short under circumstances many believe require urgent answers.
As investigations continue, many people in Kano and beyond are hoping the outcome will not only bring clarity to the tragic incident but also help prevent similar occurrences in schools in the future.
For now, the death of Maimuna Sani Yaro, fondly known as Nihal, has become both a painful family tragedy and a broader public conversation about child protection, school discipline and accountability within educational institutions.
