The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has announced that its Plant One Million Trees (P1MT) campaign has surpassed 1,000 trees planted, calling on governments, corporate organisations, development partners and individuals to support efforts to restore the environment across Northern Nigeria.

In a statement issued and signed by Buhari Abba, Interim Media Officer of the CITAD Plant One Million Trees campaign the organisation described the milestone as an encouraging step towards promoting environmental sustainability and strengthening climate action across the region.

CITAD appreciated its partners, volunteers, institutions, media organisations and communities for contributing to the campaign through tree planting, public awareness and mobilisation.

It specifically acknowledged the Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme for their collaboration.

The organisation also commended Premier Radio, Arewa Radio, Guarantee FM and Freedom Radio for helping raise awareness and encourage public participation across Kano and Jigawa states.

The P1MT campaign aims to plant one million indigenous trees across the 19 northern states of Nigeria by September 2027, particularly in environmentally fragile areas affected by degradation and desertification.

According to CITAD, the initiative seeks to restore degraded landscapes, protect biodiversity, mitigate climate change and promote healthier, more sustainable communities.

However, the organisation stressed that planting trees alone would not guarantee environmental restoration, noting that regular watering, monitoring and community ownership were essential to ensuring their survival.

It urged individuals, institutions and communities to take responsibility for nurturing and protecting trees planted in their areas.

CITAD called on federal and state governments, local government authorities, development partners, philanthropists and private organisations to support the initiative through funding, seedlings, technical assistance, monitoring and sustained community mobilisation.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure that the campaign delivers measurable and lasting environmental benefits across Northern Nigeria.

“Every tree planted must be a tree nurtured and protected,” CITAD said, urging Nigerians to embrace collective responsibility for building a greener and more climate-resilient region.
