Qatar has reaffirmed that negotiations between Iran and the United States are still ongoing despite a diplomatic impasse and growing concerns over a possible resumption of hostilities.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, confirmed on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that both sides remained engaged in diplomatic efforts, expressing hope that continued mediation could help resolve their differences.

The negotiations are focused on ending hostilities, reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz, easing US economic sanctions against Iran and addressing Washington’s concerns over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States lifts its blockade of Iranian ports, eases sanctions on Iranian oil exports and agrees to end regional hostilities.

However, Washington wants Iran’s nuclear programme addressed as part of any broader settlement, creating disagreements over the order in which the proposed measures should be implemented.

Qatar has continued to facilitate communication between the two countries, while Oman has also been involved in regional diplomatic efforts.

Russia has separately called for a diplomatic solution, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov holding talks with Iranian officials in Tehran on October 19 over regional tensions and security concerns.

Despite the continuing diplomatic contacts, no comprehensive ceasefire agreement has been announced, and the timeline for ending the conflict remains uncertain.

The immediate challenge is whether Washington and Tehran can reach a compromise on maritime security, sanctions relief and nuclear restrictions that would allow a ceasefire to take effect and prevent further escalation.

Qatar’s latest statement indicates that diplomatic channels remain open, but a lasting agreement will depend on both sides accepting and implementing mutually agreed conditions.
