Niger Fire Service Saved Over 2 Billion Properties in 2023.

Niger State Fire Service has saved property worth 1,353,021,981 Naira, with an admirable 2,597,020,581 Naira from January to December 31, 2023.

The state Controller of Fire Service, Alhaji Alkali Baba, stated this during an interview with newsmen in his office.

The Controller said the Agency demonstrated unwavering commitment and resilience throughout 2023, responding to an astounding 345 fire and rescue calls, becoming a symbol of dedication to community safety.

According to him, the Fire Service showcased remarkable versatility by adeptly managing 322 fire calls, addressing 8 false alarms, and executing 12 special services, underlining their commitment to the well-being of the community.

Alkali further explained that an exhaustive breakdown reveals the wide array of incidents faced, including 197 electrical fires, 20 ongoing investigations, 17 defective generators, 10 child-related incidents, 8 cases of flooding, 7 incidents involving defective cabinetry, and 5 glowing embers.

The Controller said fires ignited across various settings, from 215 domestic incidents and 26 shop-related fires to 15 incidents involving petrol tankers and 12 fires in educational institutions.

Alkali said despite the triumphs, the Fire Service faced substantial challenges throughout the year 2023.

He said the Fire Service confronted a severe shortage of personnel; watches struggled to meet the required 15 to 20 members, posing a significant hurdle in effective firefighting.

The Controller further explained that concerns arose due to outdated firefighting equipment, emphasizing the urgent need for modern tools to align with global standards.

He said insufficient training and retraining opportunities for the staff highlighted the necessity for continuous learning to adapt to evolving firefighting methodologies.

Alkali said the lack of utility vehicles and inadequate insurance coverage created logistical and operational impediments for the state fire service.

Also, on the community, the Controller said the challenges with hoodlums during operations underscored the importance of enhanced security measures and increased public cooperation.

“Despite the challenges, the Fire Service engaged in positive initiatives,” added.

He said extensive sensitization campaigns in media houses, markets, and schools were conducted to promote fire prevention and encourage proactive measures within the community.

He also thanks the permanent secretary, Special Services Dr. Mohamed Mohamed Maku, for his efforts in securing four new fire engines at the Government House.

“Optimism surround potential government intervention to address longstanding challenges” says the Controller.

The Controller said the Fire Service charts its course into the future, calling upon the public for cooperation and assistance:

“Immediate reporting of fire incidents is deemed crucial for a timely response and effective mitigation.” Alkali.

He also appeals to the public to help and clear routes during emergencies to ensure swift and effective firefighting efforts.

He said “we appeal to government for modern firefighting equipment, increased staffing, and reliable utility vehicles.”

“As the Fire Service forges ahead, hopes remain high that collaborative efforts will pave the way for even greater strides in ensuring the safety and well-being of the community in 2024.” Controller added.
