PAKISTAN ELECTION RESULTS: Imran Khan’s PTI Wins 97, PMLN with 76, PPP 54 As Counting Continue

Former prime minister Imran Khan’s allied who is an independent candidate with Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has so per wins 97 out of 265 national assembly seats in the Pakistan general election, according to an Aljazeera media network tally of final result announced by the country’s election commission.

Also, Ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) has won 76 seats while Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) secured 54.

Counting continues in the remaining 38 seats, GLOBAL TRACKER report.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a notification to all the winning candidates. However, the results of 10 parliamentary seats have been put on hold, pending a review and decision from the ECP.

After that, about 70 reserved seats have to be allocated depending on which party has what possession. Ten of the seats are for minorities and 60 for women.

Meanwhile, Farzana Sheikh, a specialist on Pakistani politics and economy while speaking with Aljazeera’s programme INSIDE STORY said the election results were “astonishing”.

Millions turned out to defy what was widely reported as the military establishment’s desired outcome – a clear win for its preferred candidate, Nawaz Sharif, she said.

“It also points to the deep frustration of a population that really is desperate for change, desperate for a new government to address, in particular, the acute economic crisis that currently faces the country.”

In the same vein, police in the capital Islamabad has imposed restrictions to avoid conflict after supporters of PTI alleges rigging in the counting process.

The development comes as supporters of several political parties, including Khan’s PTI, are holding protests in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar cities against alleged vote rigging.

As parties protest alleged vote fraud, police in Islamabad say they have imposed Section 144 in the national capital, adding that action would be taken against any “illegal assembly”.

“Some people are inciting illegal gatherings around the Election Commission and other government institutions. It should be noted that inciting to gather is also a crime,” it said on X.
