PETITION FOR JUSTICE AND INVESTIGATION INTO THE UNJUSTIFIABLE KILLING OF ISMAIL YUNUSA BY THE NIGERIAN POLICE OF SHEKA DIVISION KANO STATE.

Dear Sir.

I am writing to you with deep concern and anguish regarding the tragic and unjustified killing of an innocent young individual in Sheka Gidan Kaji, Kano State.

The victim, Ismail Inusa, was a good Samaritan and a law-abiding citizen who tragically lost his life during an incident not involving the police on the 25th day of February 2024.

It has come to my attention that the circumstances surrounding Ismail Inusa’s death occurred as a result of lack of repersonsand dignity to human persons by the Nigerian Police, Sheka Division, which involved excessive force, including beating and the use of tear gas, during what should have been a routine arrest or simple police invitation.

It was revealed that on the early date of the incident, one resident of Sheka Gidan Kaji reported to the Sheka Division about a child custody matter. When he attempted to take the child from his former wife’s house, there was resistance from her family.

He reported the issue to the division, leading officers to the scene to arrest those suspected of hindering the child’s removal.

The suspects evaded arrest, resulting in the police apprehending their father instead.

Further details revealed that the officers from the Sheka Division returned armed with heavy sticks and tear gas, indiscriminately beating anyone in sight. Isma’il, who was discussing family matters with his mother at home, rushed outside upon hearing the commotion.

A police officer struck him on the chest with a stick, and shot him with tear gas, and he fainted, losing consciousness. Friends who witnessed the incident took him to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, of Kano State where he was confirmed dead.

Since the incident, none of the members of Nigerian Police Officers has gone to condole with the family of the victim.

Isma’il Inusa was known for his obedience to his parents and his commitment to living an ambitious and lawful life. His untimely demise has left his family devastated and the community in shock.

I, along with many concerned citizens from Sheka Quarters, urge you to launch a thorough and impartial investigation into the events leading to Ismai’il Inusa’s death.

We request transparency throughout the investigative process and accountability for any misconduct that may have occurred during the incident.

Furthermore, we seek reassurance that steps will be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future. This includes appropriate training for law enforcement officers to handle situations without resorting to excessive force and a commitment to upholding the rights and safety of every citizen.

It is our sincere hope that justice will be served and that those responsible for Ismai’il’s death will be held accountable.

The community is looking to your leadership to ensure that the police officers operating in the Sheka Division operate with integrity and in the best interest of the citizens it is sworn to protect.
