Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has said the state is ready for the establishment of state police, describing the proposed policing system as a critical step towards strengthening internal security and improving community policing.
The governor stated this on Wednesday while inaugurating the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Government House in Kano.
Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the director general of media and publicity Kano state government house disclosed this in a statement.
Yusuf said state police would complement, rather than replace, the Nigeria Police Force, adding that both institutions would work together to protect lives and property, maintain law and order, and enhance public safety.
According to him, the two policing structures should operate as partners by strengthening intelligence gathering, improving response to security threats and building public confidence in law enforcement.
The governor said Kano possesses the institutional capacity, manpower and political will required to establish and sustain a state police system once the necessary constitutional and legal frameworks are in place.
He reaffirmed his administration’s support for initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and creating a safer environment for citizens.
Yusuf also said the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking reflected his administration’s determination to tackle the growing challenge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking through collaboration among security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.
He charged members of the task force to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, dedication and integrity, stressing that addressing drug abuse and trafficking requires sustained commitment, effective inter-agency cooperation and public support.
